Just 10 Things About How to Roll A Coupon Thru Multiple Transactions to Save Even More!

Posted on June 8, 2013 at 11:00 AM

1. If you read various couponing blogs, you may have heard someone ask if a certain coupon will "roll." Usually this refers to a Catalina like promotional coupon for dollars off a next purchase after buying certain qualifying or participating items.  The person is usually asking if they can "roll" the coupon they just got back for participating in the promotion to help pay for another transaction for the same deal they just purchased.
.
2. Most Catalina coupons of this variety do indeed "roll" when available at Kroger & it's affiliated stores. These are some of my favorite deals!
.
3. Basically what you are doing is combining a special promotion with your coupons in order to get another coupon which can be used to pay for another set of goods which will then yield yet another coupon to help pay for more groceries. Did I lose you yet?
.
4. First, let's set up the premise with a sales promotion that is currently going on at Kroger and its affiliated stores this week. This is a General Mills promotion in which if you buy 5 participating products, you will be given a catalina coupon for $5 at the register once you have paid. This catalina coupon can be used on your next purchase.
.
5. Stores offer Catalina coupon promotions as a way to get you back in their store again. Most stores will not honor another store's catalina coupon so basically in order to get your money out of it, you should use it at the store you got it from. However, you can use catalina coupons to purchase anything including meat, dairy and produce!
.

6. This particular GM promotion includes items such as Hamburger Helper, Pillsbury Slice N Bake/Ready to Bake Cookies, Chex Mix, Totino's Pizza and a host of GM Cereals including Cheerios. So what you do is come up with a combination of 5 products, mix n match, that you have coupons for to get the most savings.
.
7. Let me show you how it's done:
.
Transaction #1:
Buy 3 Totino's Party Pizzas @ $1.25 ea & 2 Chex Mix @ $2 ea.
Use $1/3 Totino's Party Pizza (printable) www.facebook.com/totinos/app_208195102528120
Use Two $0.50/1 Chex Mix (printable) www.coupons.com
Cost Before Coupons: $7.75
Cost After Coupons: $5.75
Your OOP (Out of Pocket): $5.75
Received Back: $5 off next purchase (Catalina Coupon)
.
Transaction #2
Buy 3 Totino's Party Pizzas @ $1.25 ea & 2 Chex Mix @ $2 ea.
Use $1/3 Totino's Party Pizza (printable) www.facebook.com/totinos/app_208195102528120

Use $5 Catalina Coupon
Cost Before Coupons: $5.75
Cost After Coupons: $0.75

Received Back: $5 off next purchase (Catalina Coupon)
.
Transaction #3
Buy 3 Hamburger Helper @ $1.50 ea & 2 Ready to Bake Cookies @ $2 ea
Use $0.75/3 Hamburger Helper SS 4/21 or SS 6/2
Use $1/2 Pillsbury Refrigerated Baking Items SS 5/19
Use $5 Catalina Coupon

.
Transaction #4
Buy 3 Hamburger Helper @ $1.50 ea & 2 Ready to Bake Cookies @ $2.50 ea
Use $0.75/3 Hamburger Helper  SS 4/21 or SS 6/2
Use $1/2 Pillsbury Refrigerated Baking Items SS 5/19
Use $5 Catalina Coupon

Your Cost After Coupons: $2.75

.

8. Now in 4 Transactions you have paid a total of $11. That's your OOP! And you have brought home: 6 Totino's Party Pizzas, 4 bags of Chex Mix, 6 Hamburger Helpers & 4 Ready to Bake Cookies (which freeze for at least six months really well!). And you still have a $5 Catalina Coupon that you can use another transaction either thru the promotion or just buying regular groceries.
.
9. If you include the final $5 Catalina coupon into your calculated savings, here is the breakdown of what you would have paid for each item:
.
Totino's Pizza: FREE with an overage of $0.08 per pizza for a total overage of $0.50
Chex Mix: $0.45 ea
Hamburger Helper: $0.25 ea
Ready to Bake Cookies: $1 ea
.
10. If you decide to "roll a coupon" thru multiple transaction, you may not want to do a bunch of transactions in one trip. Multiple transactions can really slow a checker down. Some checkers are expected to have a certain quota of customers or speed during the checking process. Combine that with a checker who may not be the most coupon friendly person and your trip could be a real hassle.
.
Because I live really close to my Kroger, I pass by it several times a day. I will do two transactions in one trip, maybe three if a really nice checker is on duty, but rarely four. I try to pick times when the store isn't packed like at store opening. I also know all the cashiers and wouldn't dream of hitting them with a bunch of my weirdo transactions when they are super busy. However, because of my close vicinity to the store, I can also roll this coupon a couple of times in the morning and then again in the evening when other cashiers are on the floor.
